1. Why Do Some Fish School and Others Don't?
Schooling is an instinctive behavior in fish, mainly for two purposes:

Avoiding Predators
Small fish are naturally "prey" - gathering together reduces the probability of being caught. These fish have the most organized schooling behavior.
2
Foraging Efficiency
Some fish school for collective foraging, but their "formation" is usually looser.

3. Schooling Effect vs. Fish Density
Schooling effect requires numbers, but numbers are limited by the tank's physical space.
Calculation Formula
Water Volume: Length x Width x Height / 1000 = Volume (L)
Actual Water Volume: Nominal Volume x 0.8 (subtracting substrate, decorations)
Total Fish Length: Actual Volume L x 1 cm = Allowable Fish Length
Example: Standard 60cm Tank
Dimensions: 60 x 30 x 36cm

- Nominal Volume: 64.8L
- Actual Volume: About 52L
- Allowable Fish Length: About 52cm

If keeping 3cm Neon Tetras: 52 / 3 = approximately 17 fish
How Many Fish for Schooling Effect?

Small fish (2-4cm): At least 15-20 fish

Medium fish (5-7cm): At least 10-15 fish

Large fish (8cm+): At least 8-10 fish
4. Schooling Fish Buying Tips
1. Choose One Species, Keep Enough Numbers
Mixing different schooling fish species will reduce the schooling effect. Fish will "hesitate" about which group to follow, resulting in more chaotic swimming. Choose one species and keep it at the upper limit of a reasonable quantity.
2. Create a "Tense" Environment
To make fish school more tightly, you can: reduce hiding spots appropriately, leave open swimming space; increase water flow appropriately. But don't overdo it, or the fish will become stressed.
3. Be Restrained with Tank Mates
For a schooling fish tank, it's not recommended to mix too many other fish. If you must, add only a small number of bottom dwellers (corydoras, otocinclus, etc.).

Mistake 1: Mixing Schooling Fish Species Improves Effect
Different schooling fish species mixed together will reduce the schooling effect. Choose one species and keep enough numbers.
Mistake 2: More Fish Means Better Appearance
Exceeding the density limit will cause oxygen deficiency, disease, and water quality deterioration. Keep within the reasonable upper limit.

Appropriate open space is good for schooling, but hiding spots are also needed for fish to rest.
