I Bought an Algae Eater and Almost Killed My Sweet Lemon: My New Fish Arrival Nightmare

In fish keeping, you never know what will happen next second.

Sometimes it's a surprise - fish are doing great, showing colors, breeding.
Sometimes it's a scare - like today's story, where a Tiger Otocinclus almost cost my Sweet Lemon guppy its life.

Here's What Happened

Ghost shrimp in tank
My ghost shrimp had mysteriously disappeared. Someone needed to handle algae duty, so I searched online for algae eaters. Between Golden Pleco and Tiger Otocinclus, I chose the latter.
Note:
For algae control alone, I still recommend ghost shrimp armies. I mainly wanted a bottom-dwelling fish for观赏, with watching as the primary purpose.
Otocinclus and Tiger Otocinclus are completely different species. Otocinclus has much better algae-eating ability, though it's more expensive.
I'll explain the differences at the end. It seems the seller renamed this fish "Tiger Otocinclus" just to capitalize on the Otocinclus reputation.

Sweet Lemon: I Found a New World

During temperature acclimation, I noticed a Sweet Lemon guppy eating something - a white dot?!
Swallow it.
Spit it out.
Swallow again.
Spit out again.
Swallow again...
I was completely stunned. That foam particle was just the right size for the fish to swallow but couldn't swallow down. Back and forth, back and forth... I was dumbfounded...
Luckily, the foam particle was too large. After about 10 minutes of trying, the Sweet Lemon finally gave up. (Scared me to death!)

What This Taught Me

Acclimation bag hazards
1️⃣ Temperature Acclimation Is More Than Just Temperature
Many people (including me) only think about matching temperatures, but overlook: The bag itself might have problems.
• Small particles from foam boxes
• Dust on the outside of the bag
• Dirt accumulated during shipping

All of these can fall into the tank and be accidentally eaten by curious fish.
2️⃣ Some Fish Really "Eat Everything"
Guppies, goldfish, and some tropical fish have a natural curiosity about floating objects.
Swallowing to test if it's edible is their instinct.
But foam particles, plastic fragments, and packaging debris are absolutely indigestible. At best, digestive issues; at worst, sudden death.

Proper Acclimation Process (Advanced Version)

1
Check the Outside of the Bag — Look for foam particles, dust, dirt
2
Rinse If Needed — If dirty, rinse with clean water
3
Float in Tank for Temperature Matching — Let the bag float so temperatures equalize
4
Observe for 15-20 Minutes — Watch fish condition and other fish behavior
5
Acclimate Water — Add tank water gradually in small amounts
6
Release Fish — Put fish in tank, discard bag water
One small detail could save a life.
