Fish Keeping Guide
"Should I quarantine new fish when they arrive?"
"How long should quarantine last before adding to the main tank?"
"How do I judge if quarantine is successful?"
These are questions many fish keepers have asked. Today let's discuss how to properly quarantine and how to judge "qualified" results.

Why Quarantine?

Why Quarantine
Many fish keepers think quarantine is troublesome and add fish directly to the tank without issues. But you need to know—
One lucky escape doesn't mean forever safe.
The purpose of quarantine is:
1. Observe if new fish carry pathogens (immune system drops during transport)
2. Let new fish adapt to your water quality (avoid stress)
3. Prevent cross-contamination (protect fish in main tank)
Simply put: Quarantine protects your main tank fish.

Which Situations Require Quarantine?

Not all fish need strict quarantine, it depends on their source:
•
Healthy fish from reputable aquarium shops→ Can enter tank after basic quarantine, lower risk
•
Long transport time (over 2 days)→ Recommend quarantine for a few days, observe fish condition
•
Fish with surface abrasions→ Recommend quarantine until wounds heal before entering tank
•
Fish with sick/dead companions in same shipment→ Must quarantine, high risk
•
Wild-caught fish→ Must quarantine, highest risk
•
Local native fish→ Recommend quarantine, unknown pathogens in wild environment
Simply put: Wild fish should best be quarantined, healthy fish from local aquarium shops can have relaxed requirements.
Also: If your main tank has valuable fish, even if new fish look healthy, strict quarantine is recommended.

How to Judge Quarantine "Qualified"?

This is the core content today. Remember these 4 standards:
Standard 1: Normal Feeding
Normal Feeding
During quarantine (no feeding or minimal feeding for first 3 days after arrival), fish should eat normally.
✅ Qualified Signs:
Actively competes for food, vigorous appetite
Does not spit out food after eating
Normal feces (no trailing feces, no white feces)
⚠️ Abnormal Signs:
Not eating or eating slowly
Spits out food after eating
Abnormal feces (white feces, trailing feces, transparent feces)
Standard 2: Normal Swimming Posture
Normal Swimming Posture
Healthy fish should swim smoothly and powerfully.
✅ Qualified Signs:
Normal swimming posture, balanced and stable
Moves freely in water
No sideways swimming, upside down, or spinning in place
⚠️ Abnormal Signs:
Sideways swimming, upside down, spinning (neural or swim bladder issues)
Rubbing against tank corners (possible external parasites)
Rapid breathing (possible gill problems)
Standard 3: Clean Body Surface
Clean Body Surface
This is the easiest standard to observe.
✅ Qualified Signs:
Complete scales, no shedding
No white spots, white fuzz, or red patches on body
Complete fins, no damage
Clear eyes, no white cloudiness
⚠️ Abnormal Signs:
White spots (ich), white fuzz (fungal infection)
Red patches, ulcers (bacterial infection)
Clamped fins, fin rot, cloudy eyes
Standard 4: Steady Breathing
Observe fish breathing rate and gill cover movement.
✅ Qualified Signs:
Regular, steady gill cover movement
Normal breathing rate (varies slightly by species)
No open-mouth breathing
⚠️ Abnormal Signs:
Rapid gill cover movement
Open-mouth breathing
Gill covers turned outward or congested

Quarantine Process Overview

Quarantine Process
Step 1: Prepare Quarantine Tank
Size doesn't need to be large, equipped with filter and heater. Quarantine tank should not share equipment with main tank.
Step 2: Temperature Adjustment → Water Acclimation → Tank Entry
Temperature Adjustment:Float bag in tank for 30-60 minutes, extend time if temperature difference is large. Methylene blue can be added.
Water Acclimation:Add tank water to bag every 10-15 minutes (1/4 of bag volume), repeat 3-4 times. Do not pour bag water into tank! If transport exceeds 3 days or there are dead fish, recommend only temperature adjustment without water acclimation.
Tank Entry:Use net to transfer fish to tank, discard bag water.
Step 3: Observation Period
Rest for first 3 days, start normal feeding on day 4. Observe swimming posture, body surface, breathing, and feces daily.
Step 4: Judge Qualification
Observe for 7 consecutive days, all 4 standards met, no abnormalities, stable condition.
Step 5: Enter Main Tank
Repeat temperature adjustment and water acclimation. Note: If fish becomes sick during quarantine, isolate for treatment, stabilize for 7-14 days after recovery before joining main tank.

How Long Should Quarantine Last?

General Recommendation: 7-14 days

7 days:Minimum observation period, suitable for hardy species

10-14 days:Standard quarantine period, suitable for most situations

>14 days:Fish that have been sick before, or when main tank has valuable species
Time is not absolute, the key is observing fish condition.
4 Standards for Qualified Quarantine
✅ Normal Feeding
✅ Normal Swimming Posture
✅ Clean Body Surface
✅ Steady Breathing
Quarantine is not trouble, it's protection for your main tank fish.
Spending a few extra days observing is far more worthwhile than losing all fish in main tank.
But remember: Quarantine is not a one-time solution. Improper care afterwards can still make fish sick.
