After keeping fish for several months, you notice they haven't grown much?

They're still small, their colors aren't bright enough, and you've been feeding them plenty...

This problem has troubled many fish keepers, including myself. Today, let's discuss the common reasons why fish don't grow.

🔍
Reason 1: Tank Too Small, Overcrowding
Image
This is the most common reason. A tank that's too small with too many fish means they don't have enough space to swim, so naturally they can't grow properly.
•
High density = unstable water quality
•
Poor health = stunted growth
Solution:
-
Reduce the number of fish
-
Get a larger tank
-
Strengthen the filtration system
Big water grows big fish, small tanks for small fish
🌡️
Reason 2: Inappropriate Water Temperature
Image
Each fish species has an optimal temperature for growth. For example:
Tropical fish:
24-28°C
Goldfish:
18-24°C
Koi:
15-25°C
If the water is too cold, the fish's metabolism slows down - they eat but don't gain weight. If too warm, they burn more energy and also won't grow well.
Solution:
-
Use a heater (for tropical fish)
-
Cool the tank in summer
-
Keep temperature stable, avoid fluctuations

Reason 3: Wrong Food, Insufficient Nutrition
Image
Not all fish food is the same. Some have low protein content - fish eat to "fill their stomachs" but don't get enough nutrition.
Three things to check when choosing food:
1
Protein content — Growing fish need 35%-45%+ protein
2
Food size — Must match the fish's mouth size, too small or too big won't work
3
Freshness — Expired food loses nutrition and may be harmful
Feeding tips:
-
Small amounts, multiple times - 2-3 times daily
-
Feed until 70-80% full each time
-
Supplement with live or frozen food for extra nutrition
💧
Reason 4: Poor Water Quality Over Time
Image
Fish live in water - water quality is their "air." High ammonia, elevated nitrite, low oxygen... all these affect fish growth.
Symptoms:
•
Fish frequently gasping at surface
•
Loss of appetite
•
Dull coloration
•
Slow growth
Solution:
-
Regular water changes (1/4 to 1/3 weekly)
-
Improve filtration
-
Test water parameters
🧬
Reason 5: Genetic Factors
Image
This one is harder to address. Some fish are naturally "small-sized," for example:
•
Mini parrot fish — naturally won't grow large
•
Some guppies — genetics determine body size
•
Inbred offspring — may have growth defects
Solution:
-
Buy from reputable sellers
-
Check parent fish size - large parents more likely to produce large offspring
📋 Quick Checklist
If your fish isn't growing, check in this order:
1
Space
Tank size, stocking density → 1cm fish/1L water (reference)
2
Temperature
Is it in optimal range → Tropical fish 24-28°C
3
Food
Protein content, freshness → Protein 35%+
4
Water Quality
Ammonia, nitrite → Ammonia <0.02mg/L
5
Genetics
Species characteristics, source → Choose reliable sellers
