Must-Read for Fish Keepers · Scientific Investigation · Stay Calm
Last night, I discovered my newly purchased fish had mysteriously disappeared?! I spent nearly an hour searching in front of the tank, rummaging through the bottom and flipping over stones, but still couldn't find any trace... Did it jump out? Did it die? Only when I spotted its little head peeking out from under the water pump, I could finally go to sleep with peace of mind.
The Fish Tank Search Adventure

🔍 Four Main Reasons Why Fish "Disappear"
Common reasons for fish disappearance
🏠
Hiding Inside the Tank
Fish burrow into decorations, aquatic plants, or substrate, making them hard to spot - they're actually safe and sound in the tank.
🚪
Jumped Out of the Tank
Many fish exhibit jumping behavior, especially when startled, and can easily fly out through the tank opening.
💀
Decomposed After Death
After small fish die, they quickly sink to the bottom and get eaten by tank mates, sometimes disappearing completely without a trace.
😤
Eaten by Tank Mates
Big fish eat small fish, or aggressive species eliminate weaker ones - a common issue in community tanks.

🔎 Five-Step Investigation Method to Find Your Fish
Flashlight inspection of corners
1
Turn Off Lights for 10 Minutes, Then Turn Them On to Observe
Many fish hide in corners when lights are intense. After lights are off, they relax and swim out. Wait a while before turning lights back on - you'll often immediately spot them.
2
Carefully Inspect Every Corner Inside the Tank
Key spots to check: gaps between stones or decorations, bottom and stems of aquatic plants, near filter intake pipes, and disturbed areas in substrate. Use a flashlight to illuminate dark areas for better results.
3
Check the Ground Around the Tank
If the tank has no cover, immediately check the floor beside the tank, behind cabinets, and even between the tank lid and light fixtures. Fish that jumped out may still be saved if found on a damp surface - return them to water immediately.
4
Observe Other Fish Behavior
Are other fish unusually gathered in one spot? Frequently opening their mouths toward the substrate? They might be feeding on a dead companion. This suggests the missing fish may have died and is decomposing.
5
Test Water Quality
If you can't find the fish body but water quality deteriorates with rising ammonia levels, organic matter is decomposing in the tank. You need to change water and check the filtration system to prevent further water quality decline.
💡 Tip:
Counting fish carefully during feeding is the simplest and most effective monitoring method. If all fish normally show up during feeding, you'll notice immediately when one is missing.

⚠️ Found It! What Now?
Returning fish to water
If the Fish Jumped Out and Is Still Alive:
Immediately gently return the fish to water - don't grab it with dry hands. After returning, keep the area quiet and observe for several hours. If the fish resumes swimming normally, it's likely fine.
⚠️ Note:
Even if a jumping fish appears to recover normally, it may die from stress in the following days. After returning it to the tank, observe closely and consider adding a small amount of antibacterial salt or stress relief supplement if necessary.
If the Fish Has Died:
Remove the body as soon as possible to avoid water contamination. Check water parameters, consider a 30% water change, and analyze the cause of death - was it disease? Poor water quality? Or attack by other fish?

🛡️ Prevention: Habits That Keep Your Fish Safe
Peaceful aquarium life
🪟
Install Tank Cover or Jump Prevention Net
Any fish with jumping habits should have jump prevention measures. Keep water level not too high, and tank opening gap no more than 1 cm.
📊
Regularly Record Fish Count
Count fish once during each feeding, maintain a simple log, so anomalies can be detected promptly. (You can use: Gang Hao Mini Program)
🧪
Test Water Quality Weekly
Ammonia, nitrite, and pH are the basic three parameters. Stable water quality is the foundation of fish health.
🤝
Cautious Community Tank Setup
Don't mix fish with vastly different sizes. Fully understand the habits of aggressive species before deciding whether to keep them together.
Fish keeping requires patience and attention. Every fish deserves proper care. I hope this article helps you, and may your aquarium always be lively with all your fish safe and sound. 🙏
